The story behind the artwork

The Siren is an ode to the ancient stories whispered wherever sea meets sky: tales of wild moonlit waters, guiding stars, ethereal songs, and women whose magic could never be explained.

At the heart of the design is John William Waterhouse’s Mermaid, surrounded by crashing waves from another of his sea paintings, The Tempest. Above her, stars from the Large Magellanic Cloud, captured by modern observatories, shimmer across the night sky. A luminous moon and the steadfast Eddystone Lighthouse keep watch over the tides.

Sparkling stars inspired by Empress Sisi’s famous diamond hair ornaments crown the Siren, weaving history, folklore, and the ocean into one enchanted scene. The poem circling the print was written in the spirit of Tennyson:

O daughter of the moonlit sea whose song can soothe the tides
For tempests of the heart has she a thousand lullabies
And every star a memory reflected in her eyes
