About the Flora Poetica Print
Flowers have always been poetry without words. Our Flora Poetica collection takes its name from a beautiful Victorian essay celebrating the poetry of flowers, and is our own love letter to the artists, writers, and dreamers who have spent centuries trying to capture their beauty.
At the heart of this design is Jan van Huysum’s magnificent Still Life with Flowers (1723), one of the Dutch master’s most celebrated botanical paintings. Unlike many flower paintings of its time, Van Huysum placed his glorious bouquet against an open garden landscape, where a statue of Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers, watches quietly over the blooms.
We wove hand-painted swallows, goldfinches, and greenfinches throughout the composition, bringing movement and birdsong to the garden. The trim is adapted from a nineteenth-century textile fragment entitled Meandering Vines, with swallows weaving through its delicate leaves. The result is a joyful symphony of blossoms, birds, and winding vines, a lush and wild celebration of the poetry that has always bloomed in the natural world.
